How Tariffs Are Shaping the Home Furnishings Industry

Rising Prices and Industry Shifts

As tariffs continue to shake up the economy, a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the home furnishings industry is by no means exempt. Prices for kitchen & dining room furniture have risen by as much as 25% since February 2020. And as of October 1st, tariffs as high as 50% have taken effect on foreign-made kitchen cabinets, vanities, and upholstered furniture. Industry giants, including Ashley Furniture, have responded by raising prices on most of their catalogue in turn.

Why U.S. Manufacturers Aren’t Immune

While one of the main goals of these tariffs is to shift consumer attention to American-made goods, their effects aren’t limited to foreign producers. Many US manufacturers rely on raw materials from the same countries subject to the tariffs, which inevitably increases production costs for the United States as well.

Even without tariffs, furniture manufactured in America already tends to carry a higher price tag. This often pushes buyers to the more affordable imported pieces instead. This has become a barrier for Consumers like Erin Cummins of Connecticut, who find they have no other option than to skip furniture purchases altogether.

“Every time we’re having company over, I look at that furniture and I’m going, ‘I really need to replace that,'” says Cummins, whose threadbare couches have been well-loved by three dogs and three children. “I have priced it out a bit, but every time I do, I get sticker shock and walk away.”

The Ripple Effect on Small Businesses

These rising costs stretch far beyond the average consumer. Small businesses across all industries are struggling to weather this economic storm. Eunice Byun of Material Kitchen shared that the complexity of her supply chain has increased tenfold, leading to year-over-year declines in their total revenue. The strain is hitting Small businesses hard across all sectors, while larger retailers have largely been able to adjust to all of these changes.

The US has about 36 million small businesses, which account for 43% of its GDP. With nearly half of the private sector employed by small businesses, both employers and employees are left vulnerable.

Why Smart Strategy Matters More Than Ever

The value of agile, effective, and flexible business strategies can’t be overstated, especially at times like these. Effective targeted marketing services that help business owners reach the right customers, especially those shopping at brick-and-mortar stores, can drive real results and make a huge impact on the bottom line.
